What Are Calories? And Why Should You Care?

Friday, October 19th, 2007

By Dan Curtis, M.D. If you want to lose weight you need to know something about calories. You know that some foods have more than others. Fattening foods have more calories. Diet foods have fewer calories. But what are calories, really, and what do they have to do with you losing weight and keeping it off? Calories are basically a measurement of heat. For example, if you are going to boil water you have to heat it. The amount of heat it takes is measured in calories. A scientist will tell you that it takes one calorie to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree. (These are calories with a small c. Food Calories are with a large C and are actually 1000 small calories.) The interesting thing about calories is that the amount of heat never changes. If it takes 1000 calories to boil a pot of water today, it will take 1000 calories tomorrow, and it will take 1000 calories any time in the future to boil that same pot of water. It never changes. It doesnt matter if the heat comes from a gas stove, or burning coal, or an electric heater, it still takes 1000 calories to boil that one pot of water. You get calories from anything that makes heat. For example, there are calories in gasoline. Every gallon of gasoline will give you a certain number of calories. In fact there are about 31,000,000 calories in a gallon of gasoline. Gasoline burns hot, and that is a lot of heat, a lot of calories. So what does this have to do with losing weight? Your food has calories, just like coal or gasoline or electricity. And just like there are a certain number of calories in a gallon of gasoline or a lump of coal, there are a certain number of calories in the food you eat. You know that when you put gasoline in your car you are going to get a certain number of miles per gallon, depending on the car and how you drive. You might get 25 miles to the gallon. But you are not going to get 250 miles to the gallon no matter what kind of car you drive. The same is true for your food. An apple has about 100 calories. A tablespoon of oil has 125 calories. A teaspoon of sugar has 15 calories. It is the same for you as it is for me, and it is the same today as it is tomorrow. Calories dont change. Now, when you take in food, you body has many uses for it. Some of it provides heat and keeps you warm. Some of it is used to make muscle. Some of it powers your heart and lungs. And each of these takes calories. In the same way that your car gets 25 miles per gallon, and not 250 miles per gallon, you get a certain number of miles from an apple or from a cheeseburger. You can get about 15 minutes of exercise energy from an apple, and about two hours worth from a cheeseburger. Pick any food. That food supplies a certain number of calories. Whether it is primarily fat or protein or carbohydrate doesnt really change it. It still supplies a certain number of calories. When you eat something your body breaks it down and then uses it. It will use it for energy or it will use it to produce something the body needs. And when it is done doing those two things, it stores what is left. Your body can store a very limited amount of sugar, maybe a few hundred calories. Anything left after that has to get stored as fat. And your body can store virtually unlimited amounts of fat. Scientists have measured the number of calories in a pound of fat. There are 3500 calories in one pound of fat. So if you take in 3500 calories more than you use, you will gain one pound of fat. It doesnt matter where the calories come from, whether protein or fat or carbohydrate, those 3500 extra calories will be turned into one pound of fat. So beware of diets which claim that calories dont count. Or that claim that you can eat all you want of certain types of food, and that if you avoid other types of food you cannot get fat. That just defies the laws of physics. It is just not true, and the people that claim that are either fooling themselves or trying to fool you. A calorie is a calorie is a calorie, whether it is fat or protein or carbohydrate. Take in fewer calories than you use, and you will lose weight. Take in more than you use and you will gain weight. Now, that doesnt mean you have to count calories. You dont have to count calories, but somehow you have to come into proper balance. Diets that dont count calories accomplish the same goal somehow. Whether you use a point system, eat prepackaged meals, measure food by the ounce or gram, or control portion sizes, the effect is the same. Somehow you must take in less than your body uses and you lose weight. If you do not take in less than your body uses you will not lose weight. If you are 20 pounds overweight you have eaten 70,000 calories more than you needed, and you stored it as fat. If you are 50 pounds overweight you ate 175,000 calories more than you needed. Fifty pounds is equivalent to 1,166 cans of soda, and now you are carrying it around with you. Think about that the next time you reach for a sugary snack. There is really no magic to eating one type of food over another. Many scientific studies have proven that the weight loss from low carbohydrate diets is due to calorie restriction and not from the amount of fat or carbohydrate. While you should avoid excessive sugary snacks, you also need complex carbohydrates as part of a healthy diet. It is very hard to lose weight and keep it off if you do not know what is in the food that you eat. The more you understand about food and what it is made of the easier it will be for you to lose weight and keep it off. Whether you count them or not, calories are the key to permanent weight loss. Food is made of protein and carbohydrate and fat, and these have calories. Knowing this and using it can be your key to finally taking off that extra weight and keeping it off forever. Interested In A Japanese Garden?

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

By Sarah H If you have ever been lucky enough to behold a Japanese Garden then youll surely know what it is to truly want something. Everyone who has ever seen one of these gardens wanted one in their home simply because they are that beautiful. Well good news, its not that hard so dont wait any longer, now you can actually have it! A Japanese garden can be quite versatile although the overall landscape is fundamentally Oriental. But it can include anything from a fish pond with Koi fish to a rock waterfall and even a stream depending on how much space you have and how much of a true Japanese garden you want. The first task is to dig a ditch for the pond for the Japanese garden since no garden is complete without this. After weeding the desired area and making a sizable ditch, it is wise to go down to your local home and garden store to see what kind of materials, pond molds and other things that youll need for the garden to keep it well maintained and healthy even after you complete the project. Pond molds are black containers that are used to protect fish and other livestock from being contaminated but cement and soil that are used in the garden project. A nice addition to a Japanese garden is not just a fish pond but also to furnish the pond with oriental style plants. Plants like reeds and short filler plants work extraordinarily well with the Japanese garden since these are very easy to maintain and dont grow very fast. These plants can be tied into the garden using small pots or flat stones. Pond stones can be purchased or if you live close to a stream you can find a great selection there also. Placing these flat rocks around the rim of the pond will took care of not just the oriental plants but also it will help keep the pond mold in the ditch more firmly in place. Next up is the task of decorating the Japanese garden. With an actual Japanese garden, less is more. Because plans and rocks are very eye catching, too many of them will overcrowd the balance and take away from the garden as a whole so its best to limit the amount of plants and other ornaments like statues and statuettes. Another nice addition is a small Dojo house and an oriental statue, something that perhaps symbolizes peace or tranquility. Absolutely everything you need for your Japanese garden can be found online but because of the popularity of these gardens in recent times many local home and garden stores carry a wide range of plants, ornaments, statues and other Oriental things that will complete your garden. Just remember that less truly is more and do leave a lot of space in between your decorative ornaments so that you dont hide the beauty of your garden. A Japanese garden is simple to make and it is relatively inexpensive. In fact with the right amount of looking around and creative thinking you can put together your very own low cost Japanese garden that looks like you imported it directly from Japan! One Final Piece Of Advice: Get as many ideas as you can before starting any project so do visit home improvement ideas a site offering resources on issues like landscaping with rocks, laying ceramic tiles and even about low voltage landscape lighting fixtures. Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By CD Mohatta Your partner may be good looking. Your partner may be smart and intelligent. Your partner may be a good conversationalist and may have many other qualities. But is your partner honest? Quiz your partner’s honesty- What do we mean by honesty? Does it mean credibility? Does it mean commitment? Does it mean a person who speaks the truth? Yes, when I say honesty, I mean speaking truth. Those who speak truth are reliable people. They never change the words to suit them. They speak the truth whether it pleases or hurts. Why do we need a truth-speaking partner? Quiz the relationship- When you have a relationship, you want somebody whose words can be relied upon. We want somebody who will not play hide and seek with us. We do not want a person whose thoughts and words are different. With that kind of person we will always get hurt. We will never get any pleasure. Such persons will twist their words to blame us for all the ills and walk away hurting us. A true person will not do that. A true person will always acknowledged what we did for the relationship. A true person is a pleasure. A liar is a pain for life. Please quiz your partner’s honesty. Proper Dining Etiquette when out on a Date with Women

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By Don Diebel This week we will focus on proper dining etiquette when out on a date with a woman. Correct table manners are very important, especially on your first and second dates with a woman. You will be judged and if you have bad table manners, she may not even want to date you again. Don’t let anything spoil your chances with scoring with single women such as bad table manners which are easily corrected. Listed here is the proper dining etiquette when on a dinner date with women: Be sure and make reservations if you are going to a fancy or popular restaurant. It’s very embarrassing to show up without reservations and having to wait an hour or two for a table. Also, be sure a check to see if they have a dress code and dress properly. Be sure and tell your date in advance what to wear. When your food comes don’t gobble your food down like you haven’t eaten in a week. Eat at a moderate pace so you will have more time for conversation. It makes a bad impression if you gobble down your food and you spend the rest of the time watching your date eat. Be sure and use your napkin and place it in your lap. Do not tuck it in your belt or use it as a bib. When being seated do not allow them to place you in “bad” spots such as noisy areas, next to the restrooms, by the front or back door, areas with a bad atmosphere, etc. Do not slurp your soup, smack your lips, or chew with your mouth open. Nothing is more unsightly than watching someone talk and chew their food at the same time. Should you order for your date? If you are at a classy restaurant, you should order for your date. Ask her in advance what she wants and when the waiter or waitress comes, order for her. This makes a good impression on women. When eating insert your fork straight in your mouth. Do not place your fork in the side of your mouth. This increases the chances of you dropping your food on your table and that’s embarrassing. If you get food stuck in your mouth do not pick it out with your fingers or fork at the table. Excuse yourself and go to the restroom and get it out with a toothpick. Be sure and leave at least a 15% tip (unless the service is bad). Single women will judge you on your tipping habits. If you are cheap it can make a bad impression on them. Don’t whip out a pen and paper or calculator to calculate the tip, it could leave an impression on her that you are “cheap.” Here’s an easy way to do it in your head. Let’s say that your bill comes to $45.10. Move the decimal point one place to the left ( this will come to $4.51 which is 10% of the bill). Now divide $4.51 by 2 which will give you $2.25. Now add $4.51 + $2.25 = $6.76 in your head and this will give you a 15% tip. That wasn’t so hard was it? This article written by Don Diebel (Americas #1 Singles Expert). Thai Girls And Thailand Travel in 5 Easy Steps

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By Martin Hurley If you’ve hit an age where meeting attractive younger (than you) girls or women seems to be a wicked challenge, maybe it’s time to consider opening your mind to new horizons. Yes I’m talking about Thai girls and Thai women here. And doing it from a guy who has lived in Thailand for the best part of four years. But before we meet the perfect Thai girl, why Thailand? Maybe it’s the attention. It’s hard not to be taken by people who seem to be always smiling, welcoming and friendly. And with a great ‘not too serious about anything much’ attitude and the Thai Buddhist qualities, well, it’s all quite compelling. Anyway, Thailand is a world in itself, so be prepared to be amazed and have all your normal ‘logical’ thinking replaced with ongoing illogical and strange behavior. In other words, Thailand is a completely weird place. Just remember that when you travel to a foreign country, after you get there, you become the foreigner… Amongst all its differences, the pleasures are true and fascinating. There’s no doubt Thailand is a crazy world. But strangely enough, it seems to hang together well. And the proof is in the pudding… having thrown myself into this lifestyle, I now feel somewhat ‘apprehensive’ about having to travel to a Western country and meet Western people. Why would I feel that way? Maybe because I’ve been immersed in smiling, polite Thai people who always welcomed me and wanted to know about me. Maybe because I’ve been surrounded by Thai food that is always so important everywhere you go. Food that… “shows how we delicately care about feelings of people.” And then there’s the Thai girls… Let’s talk about Thai girls and the Thai world through these 5 simple steps: Step one: Go to http://yourthaigirl.com and read the downloadable ebook, (and while you’re there sign up to the Thai Girl, Thai Life newsletter). In this ebook you’ll learn all about Thai culture, lifestyle, and of course, Thai girls. You get savvy on what to do, what not to do, when to do it, and where to go and do it. You’ll know what it all means, and the ebook will give you the ‘inside picture’ to the world of Thailand. Step two: Book your ticket to Thailand as soon as you can. When you arrive, prepare for the slam… the heat… an invisible hammer that hits you with its mighty force… rushes to greet you with the power of a thousand simmering angels… And yet, before you know it, you’ll be slipping down the long passageways inside the cool air conditioned airport. Get your bags, your bearings, your Thai girl book and prepare for your biggest journey. (Hey, Thailand is not as hot as you think :-) Step three: Get out and meet and greet people. Prepare your name card, your few words of Thai, a nice hotel or resort with a funny name, and your best clothes. In this country, it pays to look good. Thai’s like to be clean, fresh, and attractive. No kidding. Step four: Just be you. Expect lots of questions. The Thai’s want to learn English… speak English with you. You’ll have a great, precious, remarkable time. Be adventurous. Be a tourist. Learn new things. Travel on the sky train. Step five: That’s it, all done. Remember though to keep light-hearted. The Thai’s like to have fun, not be ‘too serious’ and will appreciate it if you show respect to the things that are important to them. The key word is enjoyment. Have fun. Actually, there’s really nothing to it. It’s so easy (once you’re here!) The main thing is to keep your calm, appreciate the beauty of Thai girls, seek out quality relationships, and let me know how it all goes, okay. Copyright 2007 Martin Hurley Martin Hurley opens the ‘unseen’ doors to the world of meeting Thai girls and the Thai lifestyle at http://yourthaigirl.com. If you ever thought it was difficult meeting women, you’re in for a big surprise. His downloadable book will show you just how easy it really is… And make sure to read the ten most dangerous mistakes you could be making with any woman too… Discover all about Thai Girls And Dating Secrets here. 5 Ways To Pay For College

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By Aurel Radulescu One of the most stressful things about attending college is figuring out how to afford it. Paying for college doesnt have to be impossible and students dont have to be wealthy in order to get a quality education. There are a number of ways that almost anyone can afford to pursue the career of their dreams with the education they deserve. Many traditional colleges and universities offer a convenient payment plan, which can be divided up into 10-12 months. After determining the entire yearly cost, that figure would be divided by the number of monthly payments and paid at the colleges billing office. Payments are usually determined from one year to the next and students must finish paying for one year of college before entering into a payment arrangement for the next. An example would be a college that would cost $12,000.00 per year in courses, meals and living on campus. In this scenario, many students can pay $1,000.00 per months for one year. For many families, a payment plan is much easier than trying to come up with a lump sum payment upfront. Every year, many students qualify for federal student loans. Applications and information can be obtained at a high school guidance counselors office and/or the college of interests billing office. Applications for student loans are accepted each year and are generally required to be submitted at, or near, each new year. In order to be considered, students must be willing and able to provide documented income for themselves and their family so that their loan application can be properly assessed. Local businesses, organizations and even colleges often provide scholarships to students who they believe will excel at college studies. These scholarships are usually available to high school seniors and are based on a number of factors, including grades, participation in school activities, employment and a personal interview. In order to be considered for a scholarship, students must apply by obtaining an application at their high school guidance counselors office or from the organization granting the scholarship. For students who are not eligible for the above options, but still want to attend college, there is an alternate option that will gradually help them to work toward their degree. College courses are offered at a certain cost, which is calculated on a credit hour basis. Many colleges allow students to enroll in several classes without becoming a full-time student and being required to pay the full tuition. These students can often pay as they go, which means they only pay for the course(s) they are taking at the time and this will be a much more affordable way to pay for college. It will take longer to obtain a degree, but anything worth having is worth waiting for. Anyone who wants extra cash to pay for college may find that a part-time job will help, along with selling items at online auction sites, such as eBay and Yahoo. Many students have financed their college tuition through these auction sites without taking too much time away from their studies. Find more about online college degrees, college girls, Broward Community College and many others college and education subjects. Carp Fishing

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

By Chris Braithwaite An ancient way of survival turned hobby, fishing, is cherished by many for its relaxing, natural setup. But if you think fishing is all about throwing the line in the water and oozing down in your fold-up chair while getting a tan, think again. Sometimes fishing is hard work! Especially carp fishing. Read on and youll find out why You dont have to be an extremely experienced fisherman to recognize this scenario: you prepare for a fruitful day of carp fishing, thinking you got the right bait, the right rod, the right line and so forth but several hours pass without any luck for you. When you look up just a few hundred meters away, some random guy using the same tools and same bait is pulling out big carps every now and then. How come hes catching them regularly, while you end up empty handed at the end of the day? When you ask him about it, he just winks at you and through his smirk, he says Its all about luck, mate!. But you know it cant be simply a matter of luck, its too plain obvious. Chances should be equal for both of you And heres where most fisherman go wrong, thinking carp fishing is only about chance. What they dont understand is that fish arent always equally spread out in a lake and they prefer certain areas and certain depths more than other. Actually, experienced fisherman agree that the biggest challenges of carp fishing are choosing the right bait and choosing the right fishing spot. Well discuss the bait part a bit later, but first lets see how you set your position up so that you maximize your chances of landing the cast near some fat carps. Its well known that carps are fish that tend to stay deep, near the floor of the lake but how can we know what deep means without knowing the exact topography of the lake youre fishing in? One direct, but rather blunt way is to ride off in a boat, using an extendable pole to check the exact depth of the area and try to cover several positions so that you get an approximate clue to what the lakes topography is. Of course, this carp fishing method has 2 major disadvantages. One would be that riding off in a motor boat in what youll find to be excellent fishing spots might scare the carps away, which means that youll have to wait a while before you can fish in that particular area. The other disadvantage is that the lake (or at least some areas) will simply be way too deep for an extendable pole to handle. But if you know for a fact that the lake is shallow enough to allow for some floor poking then its a relatively efficient method, especially that youll only have to do it once, write down the numbers, try to approximate the topography and then use the blue prints over and over again each time you fish there. An alternative method of testing the depth of a lake that is becoming more and more popular amongst experienced carp fisherman is the so-called plumbing rod. This requires a spare rod armed with a 3 oz lead sinker with a free running barrel swivel attached. At the end of the line, tie a large bobber so that the lead is allowed to run freely on the line until it hits the float. Cast the rod and wind the line until the float has hit the lead on the bottom. Congratulations, you just found out the depth of that particular spot, now all you need to do is measure it. Slowly let out the line approximately one foot at a time until the float comes up. The number of feet the float rises from the bottom is directly proportional to the number of feet of line you let off the reel, so keep count of the line and youll have a pretty accurate measurement of that spot at the end. Like I stated above, choosing the right bait is equally important to choosing the right spot when it comes to carp fishing (well this is generally important to all sorts of fishing types, but even more so to carp fishing). Lets start off the subject by saying that as a general term, particle bait is the best type of bait you could use in carp fishing. This includes a wide array of baits such as beans, corn, peas, vegetables, nuts and even peanuts. The problem is that although generally effective, you cant say that is the best for carp fishing. It depends on so many factors such as water type, depth, natural food sources of the fish in that particular lake (and we can go on an on), that it would be rather inaccurate to state such a thing. Personal experience will make a huge difference here so its best if you try them all for a while, or why not a combination of two or more particle beans on the same cast. What happened to the poor, old, standard worm-in-the-hook you may ask? Well the problem with worms or any other wiggly meat baits is not that the carp wont be attracted to it (by God, a worm must be the royalty of meals in every fishes menu) but that other, faster, more aggressive fish will see and grab it first. So its best if we use the above-mentioned particle baits which are not very tempting for other fish, but equally delicious for carps. A popular technique used in carp fishing is pre-baiting. This means that once you have zeroed-in on the spot youre about to fish in, you take a short on-boat trip to where youll figure the casts will land and spray the water with bait of all kinds in order to attract the carps (and inevitably other fish too). After the panic caused by your boat settles in, you can start casting. Dont worry about the fish choosing the pre-bait before the one in your hook, since by the time you cast, there will be plenty of carps there banging their forks and knives to the table, waiting for food and your bait-filled hook sliding down to the bottom will surely grab their attention. Now that you know how to choose your carp fishing spot and what to place in the hook, start exercising your arm muscles since theres going to be a lot of hard work and pulling to be done, getting those fat carps to the tip of your rod. Oh and if you see a poor fellow fisherman sitting a few feet away from you, frustrated by the fact that hes empty handed while youre reeling in carps like theres no tomorrow, just give him a wink and a smirk and say Its all about luck, mate!secrets are meant to be kept ;). Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss #1

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

By Tami Close I am so grateful that youre taking steps to take control of your life. You will be amazed when we work together how much youll uncover about yourself. Youll understand how your thoughts have contributed to your being overweight and you will take daily steps to put together a new plan of action for yourself. I imagine that you are tired of living like this and want some new, something better for yourself. I am here to help you and I know you can do it! As an integrative body therapist, I work with energy and thought processes. With this in mind, were going to begin this lesson with a discussion on energy and how you attract excess weight. Everything is made up of energy. The couch youre sitting on, the table, even money is made up of energy. Our bodies are nothing but pure energy. Since everything is made up of energy, these things are affected by the Natural Laws of the Universe. These Laws are designed to manifest whatever we put our thoughts on. In simple terms, whatever you put your mind on, is what youre going to get. Were going to look at one of the Natural Lawsthe Law of Attraction. How does this apply to being overweight? When you hold negative thoughts in your body, symptoms appear based on those thoughts. In your case, you hold excess weight. You may be experiencing other symptoms as well, but your main focus right now is your weight. You hold negative thoughts in your body and this attracts excess weight. According to Louise Hay, author of You Can Heal Your Life, outlines weight issues in her book and anger is the driving force underneath the weight. It can be anything from anger at being denied love, anger at the parents or anger at one specific parentoften the father. In my case, I was angry at both parents, but more so my father. Now, I’ll be giving you homework assignments because I like this to be interactive and have you contribute as well. So here’s your first homework assignment. Its very simple. Identify who youre angry with? You can include yourself. Once youve done this then describe why youre angry with the person(s) youve identified and be specific. Well be peeling back layers and these are simple steps to uncovering some layers. I will then address how you can release this anger so you can experience pure joy and love. In your case, especially of your body. You are great just the way God intended you to be! You just need to peel back a few layers to reveal the wholeness that is already there. Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. Tami Close Weight Loss Expert http://www.tamiclose.com Tami Close is an Integrative Body Therapist.
