Contact Lenses - Buying Tips To Save You Money

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Helen Hecker Always buy from a reputable company; you can buy discount contact lenses without a prescription, but the company is selling you a prescription device as if it were an over-the-counter device, in violation of FTC regulations - selling you lenses without having a prescription from you. Now it’s easy to order the perfect contact lenses online at a great discount. Ophthalmologists (M.D. or D.O.) are eye surgeons who study and treat eye diseases and can also perform the duties of optometrists; optometrists (O.D.) examine eyes, diagnose and treat vision problems, and prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses and in most states they also can prescribe medicine; opticians grind and dispense eyeglasses and in some states dispense contact lenses. Before you buy contact lenses from anyone other than your eye care professional, it pays to be a wise consumer. You’ll want to take simple precautions to make any lens purchase safe and effective. Although easier to handle and less likely to tear, rigid gas permeable lenses are not as comfortable initially as soft contacts and it may take a few weeks to get used to wearing the RGPs, compared to just a few days for soft contacts. With planned-replacement lenses, the doctor works out a replacement schedule tailored to the needs of each patient. Extended wear contact lenses are used for overnight or continuous wear ranging from one to six nights or up to 30 days. Extended wear lenses are usually soft contact lenses; made of flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea. Extra-thin soft lenses are on the market for very sensitive people. Rigid lenses generally give you more clear vision. Rigid gas permeable contact lenses are more durable, resistant to deposit buildup, and generally give a clearer, crisper vision. Keep in mind contact lenses are often more complex than appears. You can mark rigid lenses to show which lens is for which eye; they don’t rip or tear, so they’re easy to handle. Bifocal correction is possible with both soft and rigid lenses. Soft contact lenses are made of soft, flexible plastics that allow for oxygen to pass through to the cornea. When you place your contact lens order, request the manufacturer’s written patient information for your contact lenses; it’ll give you important risk and benefit information as well as instructions for use. Carefully check to make sure the company gives you the exact brand you ordered, the name of the lens, the power, sphere, cylinder, if any, axis, if any, diameter base curve, and peripheral curves, if any. Get a feel for how the retailer handles customer service calls; in case you have a problem after your order arrives. Compare prices - get quotes from two or three online and offline suppliers. Always ask what rebates are available. Check out how long the online supplier has been in business before you buy. You can buy contact lenses from an eye doctor, on the Internet, from an optical store or a warehouse club. When you receive your order, if you think you’ve received an incorrect contact lens, check with your doctor or eye care professional right away; don’t accept any substitution unless your eye care professional approves it. Make sure you have a current, valid prescription when you order contact lenses. Don’t wear lenses any longer than they’re prescribed for, nor when sleeping unless you are otherwise directed. Heat disinfection is the only method effective against the microorganism Acanthamoeba keratitis, a common culprit for contact lens wearers, and it also kills organisms in and on the lens case. Extended-wear rigid lenses can cause unexpected, undesirable, reshaping of the cornea. Soft extended-wear lenses bind down on the closed eye, but they are porous and allow some tears through during sleep; because they have so little form, their binding has very little effect on the shape of the eye. Microorganisms may be present in distilled water, so always use commercial sterile saline solutions, if you plan to use enzyme tablets in water for disinfections. The FDA has approved extended-wear lenses for use up to seven days before removal for cleaning; but there are risks with use of extended-wear lenses even for one night. If you haven’t had a check-up in the last one or two years, you may have problems with your eyes that you’re not aware of, or your contact lenses may not correct your vision as well as you’d like. If you’re looking for cheap contact lenses, you may find that cheap materials or other ways of cutting costs will affect the quality you’ll want for your precious eyes. Shopping for contacts online will save you a lot of money; contact lenses are deeply discounted. Garden Year-Round In Your Home

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Martin Sarkissian Whether it is wintering expensive outdoor annuals inside your home, investing in a smallgreenhouse or growing miniature indoor gardens on window ledges and in special containers, thereare many ways to keep gardening all year. Growing plants and flowers, both indoors and outdoors adds an element of beauty to your yard andhome that can be very satisfying. Its also profitable. Well-placed trees, shrubs, flowering plants andan attractive lawn can increase the value of your property by as much as 10 per cent. A greenhouse or solarium, or miniature indoor gardens that allow you to garden year-round, alsoadd beauty and value to your home. A greenhouse, in fact, can be therapeutic. Not only can youwatch flowers bloom and harvest vegetables and herbs 365 days of the year, you can work the soiland tend to it regardless of weather conditions. So, if you dont want to give up the spade this fall, begin to consider the following options now:Bringing your fancy annuals indoors In addition to the inexpensive annuals, such as impatiens and petunias, most of us plant to addcolour to our gardens every spring, consider investing as well in more expensive, but interestingand hardier annuals. Its well worth the extra investment because most of these more expensive annuals will winter quitewell inside your home, adding colour and brightness to those dull, dreary winter days. Plants that perform well over the winter include hibiscus, lantana, Mexican heather, passion flower, lithodora, the Mandevilla hydrid, geraniums and others available in spring at most garden centres. After enjoying their beauty all summer long, cut them back before the first frost in fall, pot andplace them in a bright spot indoors until the following spring when you can slowly re-introduce themto the outdoors. Dont forget to include some herbs, such as rosemary, which stay well indoors overthe winter too. Dont expect the plant tags to tell you these plants can thrive for more than onesummer, though. Invest in a greenhouse A greenhouse can be the key to year-round gardening for many avid gardeners. There are manygreenhouse models on the market today, in varying sizes and prices, to choose from. You can buildyour own, buy prefabricated kits which must be assembled, or have one custom built for yourhome. Greenhouse gardening requires plenty of sunlight. So, choose the location carefully and consider thepossibility of future expansion when deciding on the size. Greenhouses require fans, heaters, vents, sprinklers and shelving units. A variety of glazing materials are used to promote thermal efficiency, including glass, acrylic, film and polycarbonate. These materials can increase the rate of plantgrowth by as much as 50 per cent. A greenhouse can be an avid gardeners dream come true. You can grow exotic plants andvegetables, experiment with new gardening techniques, and experience the warmth of a summergarden on the coldest of winter days. Creating an indoor garden Greening your home with indoor plants is fun and a bargain compared to filling up and brighteningspaces using furniture and other decorative techniques. You can hang them from the ceiling, setthem on tables and other furniture pieces, perch them on window sills, prop them in empty corners– the possibilities are limitless. Dont settle for just simple houseplants, There are many varieties of plants to choose from, including dwarf trees that can easily raise a crop of grapefruits, lemons or oranges right in yourliving room — but you should expect a three to five year wait for the first fruit to develop. If you dont have a big home or big ideas about indoor gardening, miniature houseplants can bevery cheerful and great decorators. Because they occupy less space, you can also grow more ofthem and in greater variety. Dwarf geraniums, for example, will bloom over and over again. Smallpots of colorful cacti will do well on a narrow window sill. Windows can be the best places to decorate with a living garden, as long as the plants are nothaphazardly arranged. It should be an artistic composition, an arrangement of plants and containersthat create an attractive, refreshing and charming effect. Martin Sarkissian acme realty Inc. More Spice Please!

By Tina Porter After being diagnosed with high cholesterol and high blood pressure, I began looking for natural ways to lower both without having to take a bunch of pills every day. Of course my doctor told me to get more exercise and change my diet. He gave me the normal list of, no flavor foods as well as three new prescriptions. I knew there had to be a healthier way to eat without losing the flavor. So, off I went looking for more information. Oddly enough, I discovered something quite surprising while discussing my cholesterol and blood pressure problem with my Aunt. My Aunt loves food and anything that has to do with food. I would even go so far as to say she is a gourmet cook. She does not follow a low fat diet nor does she avoid foods that are high in cholesterol or sodium. Therefore, I was really surprised to find out that her cholesterol and blood pressure levels are well within the healthy range. This puzzled me because not only do we share genetics we share many of the same eating habits, with the exception of one. She loves spicy foods and I tend to avoid them. This really made me stop and think. The next day I called my doctor and asked him if there was any correlation between spicy foods and lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels and he assured me that there was. Spicy foods are actually very beneficial when it comes to some medical ailments. There is a substance called Capsaicin that is found in many varieties of hot peppers, which are used in many spices and hot sauces. Researchers have found that Capsaicin is useful in not only lowering cholesterol and blood pressure but also for treating colds and fevers, speeding up the metabolism, preventing certain types of cancer, and controlling pain. It can also be a key player in the prevention of heart disease and Ulcers as well as many other serious health problems. This is good news for me. Even though I still have exercise more and change my diet to include less fat and sodium, I do not have to sacrifice flavor to do so. I can take some of that boring, fat-free food and spice it up a little without worrying about making it unhealthy. In fact, adding some spice will actually make it even healthier. How can I go wrong there? I still take the medications the doctor prescribed because I do not think eating spicy foods alone will cure the problem. However, by combining spicy foods with the medications obtain better results than with just medication alone. Tina is a wife and a mother of two picky teenagers. She loves to cook, read, and write. She also loves to research all topics that have to do with food. This stems from a quest to make meals that everyone in her family will enjoy. This has also resulted in some surprising finds as well as many many new recipes. She loves to share her findings by writing articles about them. Free Drug Samples in Texas A Bad Idea?

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Patt_Carpenter] Patt Carpenter “Free” is a great thing. It costs you nothing if you get something for free, right? Or does it? It the world of medicine, drug company sales reps in Dallas, Houston and elsewhere in Texas try keep sample cabinets in healthcare providers’ offices well stocked with the latest medications for doctors to give out when needed. Most individuals like going home with free samples because it saves them a trip to the drugstore, plus their co-pay, if they have one. And MDs are happy to pass them out because samples often help patients get immediately started with a treatment. But several leading medical centers are now restricting the use of samples. In addition, a small group of doctors are shutting down their sample cabinets. They say that medical professionals should be selecting the most appropriate medication for a patient based on the best scientific evidence available, not just grabbing something from the sample cabinet that might fit the bill. The doctor will say, Here, start on this, and lets see how it works, said David J. Rothman, president of the Institute on Medicine as a Profession, a research group at Columbia. The question to the doctor is: If you didnt have it in your drawer, would that have been your drug of choice? The free samples crackdown is due in part to the growing concern about the close ties between physicians and drug companies. Rothman says that physicians dont realize the extent to which their medical judgment is influenced by their acceptance of the samples. He pointed to recent studies finding that the number of doctors who treated high blood pressure with the first line drugs recommended by national guidelines was low, but increased sharply when free samples were removed. Currently, the University of Michigan Health System has completely banned free samples, and the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University medical schools have prohibited staff members from accepting them, although samples can be given to Stanfords pharmacy for use in free clinics. A number of medical groups and practitioners have also changed their policies. Dr. Jonathan Mohrer, an internist in Forest Hills, Queens (NY), said he closed his sample cabinet in part because his office was overrun with pharmaceutical sales reps. It was totally spinning out of control, Dr. Mohrer said. They were meeting each other and schmoozing in the waiting room it was like a party. Mohrer’s staff spent a portion of their time arranging the cabinet, throwing out expired medications and trying to locate the right drug. Patients were kept waiting while sales representatives were ushered in. And yet, some medical professionals say theres an upside to the passing out of free samples. Using samples, a doctor can see if a patient can tolerate a new medication before the patient buys a 30-day supply. Physicians who treat low-income individuals like to have samples for them, as well as for uninsured patients. Samples also provide patients with the convenience of one-stop shopping. If a patient has waited some time to see a doctor and rearranged their whole working schedule, it may be another four or five days before they can fill a prescription. Some doctors feel that for individuals who are busy, working people, with family responsibilities, there shouldnt be any further delay. In addition, many MDs say they like using samples because the sales reps are an important source of medical education, keeping doctors current regarding the latest drug therapies. The drugs promoted through free samples have a tendency to be newer medications that doctors are less familiar with, some experts report. Critics of samples say they prefer using older drugs, because the side effects are already known. They also say that helping poor and uninsured patients is not the intent of the sample distribution. Critics feel that Medicares prescription-drug coverage, the proliferation of generic drugs and improvements in drug company patient-assistance programs have all made access to medication much easier these days. It’s also not at all clear whether or not samples save patients money. Critics say samples may actually drive up the cost of health care in the long term, because the drugs being promoted are the most expensive, brand-name types. And, since many medical conditions require lifelong treatment, the patient would have to purchase the drugs sooner or later. Free drugs from your doctor may or may not be the best thing for your health or bank account. Precedent puts a new spin on health insurance. UCITS - 1985 - 2004

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Rafik Patel The Single Market for Investment Funds When the original Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) Directive was adopted in December 1985, Jacques Delors idea of a single market had only just emerged and the Single European Act with the now all too familiar 1992 objectives had yet to be endorsed. This is why, from todays perspective, the Directives fairly unambitious aim to approximate conditions of competition and to ensure more effective and more uniform investor protection was easily attained. Also, when the discussion on a modernisation of the Directive started in late 1991, nobody considered achieving a single market for investment funds the intention simply being to modernise the Directive and to include as yet nonharmonised products. Only when the Commission published its Strategic Programme in 1993 did the discussion on a single market for financial services really get off the ground. A further significant step forward came in 1999, when the modification of the UCITS Directive became part of the Financial Services Action Plan. This in turn forced the Council to advance its discussions over UCITS, which had been locked in stalemate for several years because of very different opinions on issues such as the use of derivatives, funds of funds, index funds or the passport for the depositary. Nevertheless, the basic elements of the Directive are today as undisputed and modern as they were some 20 years ago: Comprehensive information for investors; Effective supervision of the fund and its manager; Meaningful diversification in tradable and liquid instruments; Separation of management and segregation of assets These principles have made UCITS as we know them, that is an efficient savings instrument combined with a high level of investor protection. The new Directive has left these principles untouched and has even gone so far as to reinforce them. While broadening investment opportunities, for example through a wider use of derivatives, the new Directive strengthened risk-spreading rules and improved investor protection with the introduction of a simplified prospectus. While allowing new activities such as discretionary asset management, regulation of the management company too was strengthened, for example through capital requirements and rules on delegation. Despite all this, ten months after its final application date the Directive does not yet really work. A number of transitional issues are only now being solved by the Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR) (to wit the recently closed public consultation by CESR), the two Commission Recommendations on the use of derivatives and on some contents of the simplified prospectus have yet to be implemented in many countries. Also, a number of definition problems, in particular with respect to eligible investment instruments for UCITS, are only now starting to be considered by CESR and a public consultation as well as a public hearing are planned for April/May 2005. The final Level 2 regulation will surely not be on the table before late 2005. Other issues are bound to come up once the new Directive is really working. Even when this happens, the single retail market for investment funds will not have been achieved. This is made clear in the recent report of the Commissions Experts Group on asset management. CESRs working programme on investment management already draws some conclusions. While other markets, such as insurance and banking, seem to be undergoing further development, the Commission and CESR both agree that future regulation is needed to achieve the final goal of a single market for investment funds. What such legislation might look like will be the key discussion point between legislators, regulators and the industry in the years to come. The main obstacles to the single market for investment funds have been more or less identified Cross-border registration of passported funds is still far too complicated, time consuming and expensive; Merging funds or pooling funds assets across borders is nearly impossible because of regulatory and tax barriers; The passport for the management company is not what it should be: managing funds across borders is impossible; A significant number of funds (such as real estate funds) are not covered by the Directive; As the Directive is not a Lamfalussy-style directive, any modification and/or modernisation requires a new directive, which we all know is burdensome and very time consuming. Competition Challenges Another problem is that the current Directive is mainly a so-called product directive unlike the more modern Investment Services Directive/Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (ISD/MiFiD) and other financial services directives. UCITS are increasingly competing with new products, such as structured notes, which though less regulated and less transparent are nonetheless, in the case of retail investors, difficult to distinguish from the highly regulated investment funds. Retail investors are increasingly keen on these absolute return products. Should it prove impossible to provide them with similar products under the UCITS Directive because of a restrictive interpretation of allowed investments for example, What are transferable securities? What about investment in structured notes or in listed closed ended funds? they will, in fact, be the losers. They will be driven towards products which might look cheaper, but which in reality provide a lower level of investor protection. The discussion on how to achieve a balanced regulation for UCITS in this respect will be one of the core issues on the regulatory agenda in the months ahead. However, a really convincing and consistent solution to the problem will probably not be achievable under the current Directive simply by including new products. The shape of the current Directive needs to be reconsidered. Nobody today will argue that investor protection can also be achieved through other means such as a certain level of distribution regulation, as currently being undertaken through Level 2 regulation within the MiFiD. These are all points which the Commission will have to take into account when drafting its Green Paper on UCITS, the answer on the review clause included in the UCITS Directive, planned for mid-2005. http://www.fsp-search.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Rafik_Patel http://EzineArticles.com/?UCITS—1985—2004&id=80441 purchase phentermine cod purchase phentermine diet pills phentermine 30 mg diet pills blue clear where can you buy phentermine

How To Get Girls

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Grant BBrown You have recently spotted someone and really want to take her on a date! But alas, you were never great at it and still cant figure out how to get a girl or a date. You are unsure and not so confident. You are nervous and dont know what will happen if she reacts very strongly to your offer. It is natural to be a little apprehensive on how to get a girl whom you have taken a liking for. A little guidance on how to get a girl will help you in overcoming your inhibitions and make you surer of yourself. To begin with, if you have started liking a girl, just show your interest in her. If you are one of those shy sort of dont worry; you dont really have to declare at this stage that you have taken a liking for her, but you could start by paying attention to her. However do make sure that she knows that you are paying her extra attention. You could look for excuses of being with her, of talking to her, or just hanging around her. Even the most shy ones who keep awake at nights wondering how to get a girl can do this much. Once you notice that you have hovered around enough, the next step in your strategy on how to get a girl would be to test the waters. You could ask a colleague to find out if she has developed any interest in you. Even if the response is negative, dont give up hope yet. You just keep being nice and gentlemanly to her. Good gentlemanly behaviour is always appreciated and soon she will start appreciating your chivalry. Gradually she will start liking you more and more and soon she will ask you for a cup of coffee. Next tip on how to get a girl is that when you go out with her, you should be the perfect gentleman. You should pay for the food, for the tickets and any other bills that may crop up. It shows you in good esteem and the girl feels important. These tips are highly effective you use them in a subtle way. She should know that you are interested in her and at the same time your behaviour should not be forceful. It puts her off. Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Eddie Tobey Gastric bypass surgery comes in many forms but the most popular are combination-techniques that shrink the stomach by stapling off a small section and shortening the small intestine by reattaching it at a lower point where fewer calories will be absorbed. Gastric bypass surgery and other bariatric procedures were traditionally performed with large incisions but laparoscopes have changed that resulting in lowered risks of many potential complications. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a less-invasive technique involving several small incisions in the abdomen through which surgical instruments are inserted. The laparoscope (camera) is also inserted inside the abdomen so the surgeon can see. The benefits of Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery are smaller scars, lower risk of hernias, and faster recovery compared to traditional large incision gastric bypass surgery. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery cannot be used, however, if the patient weighs over 500 pounds. A doctor may recommend a short-term weight loss procedure like mouth-wiring to lower the weight of the patient to 400 or less so laparoscopic bypass surgery can be performed. As in any surgery for weight loss, potential candidates should remember that Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is not a miracle cure and will involve a 90-minute to 2-hour surgical procedure, a 3-6 week recovery time, and a lifelong commitment to a healthier lifestyle. The risks of the surgery include infections, bleeding, and respiratory problems. It may be difficult to eat anything for the first few weeks after surgery without feeling uncomfortable and it will take 6-8 weeks before you are able to digest proteins or complex carbohydrates. Patients who follow guidelines can reasonably expect to lose at least 50% of their excess weight over a 12-18 month period and have retained that weight-loss by at least 70% by ten years after the surgery. Gastric Bypass Surgery Info provides comprehensive information on procedure, recovery, cost and complications relating to standard, laparoscopic and mini surgeries. Brockages Not All That Common

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Brad Hall Another term that has some of the newer error coin collectors scratching their heads is brockages. The term is certainly not self defining that much is certain and it points to a very rare occurrence in the minting process. This is one of those errors that is extremely hard to locate and above all else, very valuable. Brockages occur when two coins are involved in the same retaining collar. First off you need a coin that is already struck and it is stuck in the retaining collar. Then a new coin blank is inserted. Once this occurs the dies come in for the strike and both of the coins are affected by said strike. What you end up getting is a coin blank with a mirror image of the already struck coins impression incused into the surface. This is basically a coin that was struck backwards and has no raised impression on the brockages side of the coin. For newer coinage it is a fairly rare occurrence to find this type of error. Because of the new counter measures that the mint has in place the operator is alerted when a coin fails to eject from the retaining collar. When this occurs the operator shuts down the machine and removes the coin and checks for defects in the machine. The older coins are more common to find brockages. Before a lot of stress was being put on the mint about the errors that were being produced many of this type of coin error were released. However, when it comes to error coins the older the coin the more valuable the coin. So brockages in the older mints do command a much higher price than one would expect. Brockages are not unheard of though when it comes to the newer coinage. One of the most significant examples recently sold at auction and it was a nice New Jersey state quarter that had complete reverse brockage of the reverse image. All in all you will find that most of the brockages that appear these days are not full impressions, but just partly so as the blank attempts to fall away because the retaining collar is full. These examples still have a fair amount of value and can command a hefty price. Brad Hall is the editor for http://us-mint-coins.blogspot.com the number one resource for brockages and other coin errors. You Already Know All You Need To Know

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Amanda Julynn Weight loss. Its whats on most adults minds at this very moment, and if it isnt now it will be later. And for those people who never have to worry about their weight… we all hate you! ;-) We live in the era of the trendy diets like The Zone and Atkins. We live in the pill-for-everything nation with drugs like hoodia, ephedra, cortisol, caffeine pills and appetite suppressants. But no matter what your drug or diet of choice is… it will never rid your mind of your weight loss worries. America. We are the fattest nation in the world! We are the nation of the quick fix, the quick meal, and most importantly… fast food. For those of you who have seen Super Size Me you saw a man in peak physical health start eating a diet of only McDonalds for a month. At the end of the month, he was fatter, looked physically disgusting and sick, got out of breathe while climbing up 6 steps, and he had doctors begging him to stop. Did this proof stop Americas fast food obsession….. nope! We are still the nation with sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and with people on disability because they are too overweight function normally in society. But wait! The drug companies have given us solutions! I actually had a coworker say to me as if she had some bad news, Well, my doctor had to put me back on Lipitor. And then two minutes later, So lets do Burger King for lunch?! This just aggravates me so much . All I want to say to these people is, This isnt like cancer. You werent just stricken with these diseases at no fault of your own. Its your horrible, horrible diet… JUST STOP IT! However, Id have to say that the blame isnt totally on these people. We are conditioned from childhood, with the happy meal toys, and the in-restaurant jungle-gyms that fast food is fun. As we grow up we learn its easy and socially acceptable. In our fast-paced society of mothers that are too tired to cook for their family, teens to busy with school activities, and college kids that are too bogged down with work (and partying) to even learn how to cook… where do you think the concept of fast food came from? On the other side of the scale (no pun intended), we have the weight loss industry. One of the most profitable industries in America. We are constantly bombarded with the latest pills, supplements, diets, programs, gyms, trainers, and exercise equipment which leaves our heads spinning! Now when you think of it in the cynical, suspicious way that I do… the fast food industry is making us fat, then the weight loss industry jumps in to save the day… coincidence?… conspiracy?… well save that for another article. Whats more important is that we are all being manipulated by these industries because we are lost! We dont trust ourselves to know how to lose weight because we are the ones who let ourselves put it on in the first place. So we read all the books, go to all the web sites, watch all the infomercials trying to see whos got it. Whos right, whos got the secret, who is the weight loss god that will fix us for good and as quickly as possible. Were looking to all of these other people when all we really have to do is listen to ourselves, our bodies, and just plain logic. Think back to grade school. We learned in gym class that we need exercise and it can be fun and make us feel good. We learned about the food pyramid which, though it has recently been updated, still tells us that we need a balanced diet. I specifically remember in 8th grade biology class, learning about fats (lipids), carbs (starches, and sugars), and proteins (big chains of amino acids.) We learned that each of these substances has a certain amount of calories and that your body uses these calories as energy to keep your body working. Were burning a couple hundred calories just sitting in a chair for and hour. This is just all basic stuff that most people have been taught already…. DID WE ALL FORGET THIS!? Or do we all just want the miracle cure for gaining weight? In the 90s it was all about nonfat and reduced-fat. We all thought, hey, if what Im eating has no fat in it, I cant get fat from eating it! WRONG! All they did was up the carb count and in some cases the calorie count too. But we didnt want to see that. In the new millennium we copied the super skinny celeb actors (who, by the way, arent just getting skinny for the sake of vanity, but to keep their jobs.) And the no-carb, low-carb revolution began! We all stopped eating starches, dropped a whole bunch of water weight in the first two weeks because we had no carbs in our systems to hold onto it anymore… leaving us constipated and crying at the sight of the bread basket at the restaurant table because we couldnt have any. Dont get me wrong, I agree that sugar (as in candy) and other simple sugars should not be a regular part of your diet and my dentist would agree too. However, to deny yourself of a whole food group for God knows how long, is just plain stupid! So what does that leave us with? Everything that we learned when we were young! What it all comes down to is the amount of calories you are ingesting should be in close proximity to the amount that your body naturally burns off on its own everyday. If you wanna burn off a little more and lose some weight… stick to a balanced diet and throw some exercise in there. And this doesnt mean that you should start waking up at 6 am to run 5 miles, or to join a gym and go 4 times a week for 2 hours at a time. Because I know from experience that if you do that, youll burn yourself out and never want to exercise again! Exercise just means to up your level of activity from the level your body is used to on a normal day. Dont have much free time? So, park your car further away from the stores entrance in the parking lot than you normally would. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, even just for one flight. Walk your dog down the block and back instead of just letting him out the back door (trust me, it doesnt take as long as you think and your pup will love you for it!) Be smart. Be logical. Dont rationalize eating McDonalds for lunch everyday just because you ran a mile that morning. (Youll be screwing with your heart in more ways than one.) And Im sorry, there just arent any miracles that will make you lose 20lbs. in 2 days. Suck it up! Realize that it took you awhile to put your weight on… its gonna take awhile to take it off… as it should. However impatient we are, our bodies still need time to adjust to any change in activity, stress, and weight. And unless youre a successful model or and actor (which I doubt your are if youre reading this), youre not getting paid for how good you look on camera. So put down the copy of People magazine, stop telling yourself you need to look like that and give yourself a friggin break! Give your body a break. And more importantly, give your mind a break because this isnt brain surgery. Everything we need to know about weight loss, we learned in grade school. Bridesmaid Dresses Visited

Monday, April 7th, 2008

By Morgan Hamilton When a woman has the honor of being asked to be an attendant at a wedding, probably the first thing that pops into her head is the bridesmaid dresses. There are a whole bunch of horror stories about nasty looking dresses that were chosen as bridesmaid dresses. I have seen tons of awful looking gowns, the ones from the 80s seem to be especially hideous. There are still plenty of fine looking bridesmaid dresses out there, so be warned bridal attendants. I had the honor of paying the maid of honor for my best friends wedding and we recently checked out a bridal store to try on our gowns. The bride chose a few bridal gowns and she chose a few bridesmaid dresses in advance. It’s always a smart thing to do when you can take care of everything in advance because you never know it’s going to come up that it’s really great to have time to adjust for those surprises. I tried on three bridesmaid dresses and I was relieved and impressed with the brides excellent fashion sense. When she told me that she wanted the bridesmaids to wear pink, strapless gowns, my heart may have stopped. I imagined a shocking pink flamingo look, form-fitting dress, that would point out every single flaw on my frame - yuck. We’ll actually found or three lovely bridesmaid dresses that were complementary to any type of figure and you can’t beat that. The tough thing was actually willing down my choices to just one. The bride and I agreed which bridesmaid dress looked the best on the Internet, but we were pleasantly surprised to see that her number two choice, we liked even better. When I tried it on it felt comfortable and I felt at ease with that particular bridesmaid dress. The bridesmaid dresses or a whitish-pink, and though they are strapless, not my favorite choice, the bride decided to incorporate short jackets as an accessory for those of us who prefer not to attend church looking like Madonna. The jacket is clean and elegant, just as the lovely pink gown was. I think that I will be very happy with the brides choice. This choice was really a no-brainer for the bride and I was relieved that I only had to try on three bridesmaid dresses. You won’t believe this but sometimes I have tried and dozens of dresses for a single wedding. I actually think that she knew which one I preferred and chose that one. I tried to keep my opinion to myself until after she made her choice. It was after all her wedding and her decision and I didnt want to influence her in any way just to please me. She may have regretted being swayed and it’s really not worth doing that. Fortunately for both of us she chose a great gown. I saw many other gowns that were nothing short of horrendous. There were bridesmaid dresses that ballooned at the bottom like something out of Cinderella. There were bright orange dresses that made us look like the great pumpkin. I actually saw a gown, and I’m not making this up, that was strikingly similar to a ballerinas tutu and I thanked the stars above that the bride in the wedding Im attending or smart enough not to go for a number like this. Although the final decision has back treatment may get and she hasn’t ordered the bridesmaid dresses yet so you never know… Morgan Hamilton offers his findings and insights regarding wedding.
